Join the OIST Foundation, the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST), and Venture Café for a dynamic discussion on how the intersection of art and science can lead to innovation. 

This cutting-edge session will feature two panelists: Dr. Kenji Doya, Professor, Neural Computation Unit at OIST and Ms. Eiko Kano, Violinist and OIST Foundation Music Ambassador.

Together they will explore the art of science and science of art and ways innovative ideas form via the convergence of these fields.

This is the first session of the three session series of STEAM for Innovation (#2: 25th Feb 8 - 9pm, #3: 4th March 8 - 9 pm).

• Dr. Kenji Doya / Professor, Neural Computation Unit, Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST)
  Dr. Kenji Doya is a Professor in the Neural Computation United at OIST. He has received numerous awards for his research including the Donald O. Hebb Award, International Neural Network Society (2018), a Commendation for Science and Technology, Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2012), the Brainscience Award on Creativity (2009), the Nakaaki Tsukahara Memorial Award (2007), and the JSPS Award (2007). From 1999-2002 he served as Vice President, Japanese Neural Network Society, and from 1999-2003 he was Director of the Neuro-Informatics Summer School. He has also served on the Board of Governors of the International Neural Network Society.
   
• Ms. Eiko Kano / Violinist and OIST Foundation Music Ambassador
  Praised as an artist with “electrifying intensity and lyrical expression” by Kyoto Newspaper and “mesmerizing interpreter” by Ongakuno-Tomo Magazine, Japanese violinist Eiko Kano is known for her sensational and dynamic performances. Eiko has a thriving international career as a soloist as well as a chamber musician frequently collaborating with distinguished artists such as principal oboist of the Berlin Philharmonic Albrecht Meyer, Eugene Drucker of the Emerson Quartet and Ani Kavafian while working closely with living composers premiering new works. She has won top prizes at multiple international competitions such as the 4th International Competition of Tokyo. As a result of winning the prestigious Forval Scholarship, Eiko was granted the Stradivarius “Reinville” violin for two years. She currently serves as an assistant concertmaster in Grammy Award-winning Albany Symphony Orchestra as well as regularly playing in the New York Philharmonic. Eiko is the concertmaster and senior artistic advisor of Pegasus: The Orchestra based in New York.
   
• [Moderator] Mr. David Janes / Senior Advisor to the President for Institutional Development, OIST & Managing Director, OIST Foundation 
  Mr. Janes leads OIST’s strategic development efforts in the United States and Japan, assists OIST in fostering relationships and building networks with leaders in U.S.-Japan relations, scientific and technology focused foundations, and cutting-edge corporations in both countries, and provides strategic advice to OIST’s President and senior leadership. Aiming to be among the world’s top science and technology universities and one of the most innovative educational institutions in the Asia-Pacific region, OIST is poised to make significant contributions to the sustainable development of Okinawa, to scientific research in Japan, and to science and technology globally. With a dynamic tech transfer program and incubator, the University is also focused on enhancing entrepreneurship in Okinawa and other areas of Japan. Previously David was Director of Foundation Grants and Assistant to the President at the United States-Japan Foundation, where he led the Foundation’s multi-million dollar grant-making program and served as the public face of the Foundation to potential and current grantees in the U.S. and Japan.
