Title:

Stretching of viscous threads

Abstract:

We investigate the motion of a slender axisymmetric highly viscous threads that are extended either by gravity or by an applied stretching force. Using matched asymptotic expansions, we obtain solutions for the full initial-boundary-value problem and show how inertia ultimately must become important. The solution allows us to understand the complicated mechanisms that underlie highly persistent filaments. This is joint work with H. Huang and R.M. Miura.

Biography:

Jonathan Wylie is a Professor in the Mathematics Department of the City University of Hong Kong where he has worked for the last 18 years. After studying as an undergraduate in Birmingham University, he went to King's College, Cambridge where he obtained his PhD and was subsequently awarded a Junior Research Fellowship. His research is focused on fluid mechanics, granular materials and other industrially and biologically motivated problems. His recent projects include: the dynamics of viscous threads; dilute particle flows through constrictions; and a a seizure-like phenomenon in the brain known as Cortical Spreading Depression that is associated with migraine.
