Session format:
2-Part workshop:
Part 1 – Interactive 60-minute workshop and presentation;
Part 2 – 30-minute hands-on session.
Speaker: Dr Jason Heustis, Director, Student Development and Training Evaluation – Program in Graduate Education and Lecturer, Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Harvard Medical School.
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to...
- Define the term “curriculum”; identify and articulate the components essential for creating a great curriculum; and critique sample syllabi or curriculum to identify their strengths and weaknesses when measured against the standards of great curricula;
- Critique and develop course objectives aligned with your own curriculum;
- Define the concepts of “formative” and “summative” assessments, and outline how they can be effectively integrated into a new curriculum to promote student learning.

About the Speaker:
Dr. Jason Heustis is Director of Student Development and Training Evaluation for Graduate Education at Harvard Medical School. At HMS, Jason teaches graduate students, develops curriculum for new and existing courses in conjunction with other educators, and assesses graduate student learning and development. He also develops para-curricular training opportunities to support the divergent career pathways of doctoral students in the biomedical sciences, both for trainees interested in academic paths and for those pursuing options from a growing range of career trajectories. He has previously taught at the undergraduate level at Harvard University, Suffolk University and Tufts University. Jason received an Honors B.S. in Biology and Honors B.A. in Chemistry and Political Science from Saint Louis University (MO) and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Tufts University (Medford, MA), before completing a post-doctoral Curriculum Fellowship at HMS. Jason is originally from Belize.
