Title: Cantor Julia sets
Speaker: Vyron Vellis,University of Tennessee
Abstract: The Julia set of a meromorphic function is the set of “chaotic points”, i.e., the set of all points that have no neighborhood under which the iterates of the function form a normal family. In absence of a rich holomorphic function theory in higher dimensions, the right substitute in complex dynamics are uniformly quasiregular (UQR) maps. Which Cantor sets can appear as Julia sets of UQR maps? How (topologically) complex can such sets be? This talk is based on joint works with Alastair Fletcher and Daniel Stoertz.

Title: Convexity in Partial Differential Equations
Abstract: It is well known that the notion of convexity plays a key role in optimization, control theory, mathematical economics and many other areas of science. This talk is a friendly introduction to convex analysis for partial differential equations. After going over a few basic properties about convex sets and convex functions, we will focus on the preservation of spatial convexity of solutions, which is one of the most important geometric properties of numerous evolution equations. Several examples will be given. We will also discuss some recent developments on this topic.
This talk is open to everyone at OIST
