OIST Café in Tokyo
~ Academic English Presentation Skills for Science Students & Career Talk by Manager of OIST Sponsored Research Section ~
As we have received quite a few requests, we will offer an English seminar on Academic Presentation for students in science majors for the first time at OIST café in Tokyo. The seminar will be presented by the OIST English instructor, Kevin Hunt, who always gives enjoyable lectures at OIST café. In the seminar, you will be able to learn tips for effective English presentation skills such as how to construct presentations, useful phrases, and how to prepare visual aids. The English seminar will be followed by a career talk by the manager of the Sponsored Research section, Dr. Yoshio Okada. He graduated from Aichi Prefectural Jishukan Senior High School, then entered the University of Tokyo to study microbiology. After studying gene expression control with microbe at the Graduate school in the same university, he went to Europe and gained experiences in research at The Institute Curie and the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in France and The University of Oxford in England. After that, he became more interested in the application of academic research in industries than actual research, and joined a venture company located in Okinawa, Japan, to work in the R&D section of plant-based cosmetics for almost 7 years. While he released many products through the research collaborations with a local university, he faced an enormous challenge in the industry-government-academia collaboration and the difficulty in applying the research outcomes to industry. After that, he joined Okinawa Industry Promotion Public Corporation to maximize the experiences acquired previously to support research activities in the venture companies in Okinawa. In 2012, he was welcomed by OIST as a manager of the Sponsored Research section and he has been supporting the OIST researchers since then. In his talk, he will talk about his passion for basic research with his variety of experience.
We look forward to seeing many of you who are going to give an English presentation at a conference or in class, students who are interested in careers after obtaining Ph.D degree and who would like to work in an international research environment.
There will be an announcement for a contest hosted by OIST Graduate Office just like we organized the Poster Contest last year:
