Abstract

The haiku poet, Matsuo Bashō, famously said, “From the pine tree learn of the pine tree, and from the bamboo of the bamboo.” Nishitani Keiji, one of the Kyoto School philosophers, interprets Bashō to be suggesting that to know a pine tree or a bamboo is to enter into a mode of being where you let go of your subjective projections and let the pine tree be the pine tree itself and the bamboo be the bamboo itself. In this talk, I try to show that this calls for us to distinguish the kind of awareness that Heidegger acknowledged in *Being and Time*, which we call “projective awareness”, from a more fundamental form of awareness which we call “open awareness”. I will do so by undertaking a phenomenological analysis of the different kinds of possibilities that our awareness opens up.
