Description

TitleIndigenous Ecologies: Integrating Indigenous Perspectives in Marine Environmental Research

Abstract: This talk explores the role and potential of environmental anthropology in marine social science, focusing on the intersection of Indigenous Knowledge and adaptation in the Hawaiian Islands. By examining how local and indigenous communities perceive and respond to environmental shifts, the presentation highlights the culturally embedded forms of environmental knowledge production. It demonstrates how indigenous perspectives contribute valuable insights for ecological resilience, emphasizing the importance of integrating these knowledge systems into contemporary environmental research. The talk advocates for a relational, multispecies approach to environmental sustainability, underscoring the significance of such frameworks in addressing global ecological challenges.

Biography: I am a certified environmental anthropologist, and a Senior Assistant Professor of Environmental Anthropology at the University of Torino, Italy. My work sits at the intersection of anthropology, environmental and conservation sciences in the northern Pacific region. I have been conducting extensive research on the topic of ecological responsibility in the Hawaiian archipelago. I am currently working on a cross-regional comparative research focusing on history, culture and ecology on Okinawa and Hawai‘i, hoping to improve our understanding of the bio-cultural dynamics between sociocultural and natural domains bearing on resilience and sustainability at fine-grained local, supra-local, and regional scales.
