Higher order Van Hove singularities in quantum materials

Abstract

In this talk, I will review the recent progress in the investigation of higher order Van Hove singularities in electronic band structure, with a special focus on layered quantum materials. After reviewing the mathematical basis of higher order singularities, I will discuss their relevance to the observable properties of 2D materials and their potential consequence for the onset of ordered phases. The broader problem of flat bands in tuned quantum materials will also be dealt with briefly at the end.

Profile of Speaker

Quantum condensed matter theorist with broad interests, including the investigation of exotic band structures in layered quantum materials. Received PhD from Boston University in May 2021. Previously a postdoc in the group of Joseph Betouras at Loughborough University, UK.
