“A cold atom simulator of a spin liquid”

Dr. Yang-hao Chan, University of Michigan

We suggest the elusive spin liquid could be studied in the cold atom experiment. We show that laser assited hopping of hard-core bosons in a square lattice can be described by an anti-ferromagnetic J_1-J_2 XY model. We numerically investigate the phase diagram of this model using both tensor network algortihm and the exact diagonalization and find strong evidence that at intermediate region around J_2/J_1~ 0.5, there is a spin liquid phase with vanishing magnetization and valence bond orders, which interconnect the Neel state on the large J_2 side and the stripe antiferromagnetic phase on the samll J_2 side. We also briefly discuss the experimental signature of these three phases.
