Abstract:
The development of digital cameras, which are applicable for a wide HV range, and which satisfy all criteria: including large detection area, Signal-to-Noise Ratio, spatial resolution, dynamic range and fast read out, is a challenge. TVIPS has designed CMOS based cameras with active pixel sensors. The cameras fulfil all criteria mentioned above due to the large pixel size of 15.6 µm with high fill factor, innovative fast multi-channel readout and lowest noise electronics, resulting in high dynamic range and single electron sensitivity. Two different image acquisition modes are implemented: ‘RS - Rolling Shutter’ and ‘NDR - Non Destructive Readout’ mode. For low noise and high sensitivity single image acquisition, the NDR mode is used, enabling a detection of single electrons. The readout time of a 4k×4k area at full resolution is 1 second. For even faster readout the sensor can be operated in the RS. In this mode, where no beam shutter is needed, real time observation and data storage with frame rates of 8.5 fps on subareas as large as 1k×8k can be achieved. A newly developed mode is the “Burst-Mode”. In this mode a predefined number of images can be acquired very fast; e.g. 2.5 images/s at 4k x 4k full resolution.
