Celebrate the International Day of Light Live with Cephi the Cephalopod

Celebrate the International Day of Light Live Streamed from OIST starring Cephi the Cephalopod 

The International Day of Light is held on May 16 every year, on the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. The laser is a perfect example of how a scientific discovery can yield revolutionary benefits to society in communications, healthcare and many other fields.

All over the world scientists, artists and the public will be joining a massive live stream zoom event celebrating LIGHT in all its forms. You can view it online at 

starting Sunday May 16 00:00 BST (Sunday 08:00 JST). 

Here at OIST, we will participate via a live-stream of a day-in-the-life of Cephi the Cephalopod.

Cephi is a cuttle fish and is one of few creatures on earth that can change their skin colour at will with very complex spatio-temporal patterns. Cehphi’s ever changing colours will hopefully provide the world, via the live-stream, with a small glimpse at how nature engineers light for it’s own purpose.
