Learning Objectives:

By the end of the session, you will be able to …

  • Summarize why making a plan has been shown to increase the likelihood of personal success.
  • Recognize that planning is a skill that can be developed over time.
  • Define what an Individual Development Plan (IDP) is, and why it is a useful tool for making progress as a scientist.
  • Understand why self-assessment and reflection are critical to building a useful plan for yourself.
  • Formulate short-term goals for your research project, so that you have a vision of what to do in the next 3 months.
  • Formulate long-term goals for your research project, so that you have identified what you wish to accomplish over this coming year.
  • Identify the skills (scientific/technical, professional) you want to develop based on your project, training requirements, and personal goals over the next year.
