The nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond have been gaining interest as a unique quantum platform for quantum sensing, communication, and simulation. This platform's notable advantages include its long coherence times and high-fidelity controllability, and it can be operated under a wide range of temperatures and pressures. In this talk, I will introduce a selection of research activities at Tokyo Institute of Technology, covering magnetocardiography, topological simulation, and material science under extreme conditions.

In the past decades, there appeared many exact results in supersymmetric gauge theories thanks to localization method. These exact results are useful to study properties of perturbative series in quantum field theory (QFT) especially in the following two senses. First we can systematically analyze perturbative series around (non-)trivial saddle points in QFT...

The symposium will include lectures and poster presentations that will provide an overview of the current status and challenges of research on the marine environment and marine ecosystems, promote the exchange of the latest knowledge among disciplines, and present cross–disciplinary perspectives. There will also be a panel discussion to discuss how the issues raised at the symposium should be addressed. In addition, a working group of young researchers and graduate students will be formed at the end of the symposium to formulate recommendations for the future of cross–disciplinary research in the coming months.

Abstract : I will explain in some detail my recent proof of Borel summability of WKB solutions of singularly perturbed higher-order linear ODEs. The proof consists of reducing the problem to a matrix Riccati differential equation in a standard form. Applying the Borel transform, we get a nonlinear PDE which we solve using the method of successive approximations. The biggest challenge is to show that this solution can be analytically continued along a ray in the Borel plane, and this involves keeping track of an interesting Stokes phenomenon.

Professor Kazumi will share her experience with fisheries and policy. She will also talk about her experience as a Japanese female professor and how to promote diversity in academia in Japan.

The United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (UNDOS) started in 2021. In the UNDOS, co-design, co-production, and co-delivery of ocean science is promoted. In Japan, ocean science through collaboration between researchers and fishermen has been in practice since before the call of the UNDOS. In this talk, one of the collaborative initiatives between ocean scientists and fishermen in Shimokita, facing Tsugaru Strait in Aomori will be presented. Keys for the collaborative work and challenges in Japan as an ocean policy scientist will be shared. Furthermore, some thoughts as a female researcher in ocean science in Japan will be also discussed.

Our knowledge of modern biology is based on the study of just a handful of species, which, due to technological investments that have been made, have become increasingly unavoidable. Neglecting, sometimes forgetting, almost all other life forms has been a consequence of this. The problem seems insoluble, but new scientific disciplines fortunately required moving beyond classic laboratory species. One of them is evo-devo, a fairly recent combination of two traditional disciplines, evolutionary biology and developmental biology. Questions on the evolution of animal development led several of us to choose Oikopleura dioica, a species little known to the general public but of considerable importance in marine ecosystems. The first results were a little shocking, but that was not the end of our surprises…

According to the philosophers of the Enlightenment, it is a moral duty to recognize others as equals worth of respect and recognition. Jean-Jacques Rousseau in the Discourse on the origins of inequality and Adam Smith in the Treatise of moral feelings have analyzed the social inequalities and forms of domination which have persisted over the centuries and are still expressed by various kinds of unrespectful and violent behaviors. Sexual harassment whose victims are mostly women is the most conspicuous, but moral bullying, especially in the work place has also emerged as an explicit issue in modern societies, which needs to be seriously dealt with. The respect owed to anyone is not only a matter of moral duty. It has become a right inscribed in laws protecting the potential victims of all kind of harassment. Transforming a moral precept into a legal right is certainly a social progress. It raises however issues which will be discussed in the talk.
