Speaker: Maya Beano, participating photographer in the Polar Blues, Island Hues exhibition at OIST with her images of Antarctica

Abstract:
This seminar will showcase Maya's personal journey and inspire attendees to explore the synergies between scientific inquiry and creative expression, offering practical guidance for integrating diverse interests into a fulfilling career.

Bio:
Maya began her journey in science in 2009 with a degree in Natural Sciences from the University of Cambridge, followed by postgraduate studies in Medicinal Chemistry. She then joined AstraZeneca in the UK and was involved in the early stages of developing novel therapies like oligonucleotides and drug delivery mechanisms including lipid nanoparticles for mRNA delivery. Maya currently works at Hikma Pharmaceuticals in the New York metropolitan area where she leads product selection and portfolio strategy, helping provide affordable medicines to patients who need them.
Maya is also a distinguished photographer whose work explores the intersection of art, science and the natural world. With her background in science, she brings a unique perspective to her art, crafting imagery that is both visually striking and thought-provoking. Maya has worked on photography projects with companies like Sony, Apple, Instagram and Toyota Lexus. Her photography has been featured in international galleries and publications such as New Scientist, New York Magazine and the Japan Times, earning her recognition as an innovative voice in contemporary art.
