Abstract: “Can we detach ourselves from the crowds, and still call ourselves scientists?” (“the life of Galileo”, B. Brecht)

You are invited on a journey to one of the most fascinating endeavours of Homo sapiens: Science education - a designed, complex, creative and highly-active process. While extremely influential on who we are and relevant to how we live, its importance as part of basic education for all has and continues to be questioned.

Drawing on decades of experience, I will explore major reasons that make “science education for all” crucial in the 21st century; touch the evolution of science education; introduce two case studies showcasing possibilities to meet current needs; and discuss fundamental capacities that underly OIST as a potential leader of science education and public engagement for all.

Profile: Dr. Liat Ben David is an experienced professional in the field of STEM education. Since completion of her Ph.D in molecular biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1991, she has developed activities and published numerous textbooks for teachers and students, trained educational leadership, founded and led learning centers, in Israel and abroad.

Over the course of her career, she served as CEO of The Wolf Foundation, awarding the internationally acclaimed Wolf Prize; and as CEO of The Davidson Institute of Science Education - the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute of Science. She currently teaches regularly in various spheres, including academia and TEDx; as well as consults on educational strategies and professional development in a range of organizations. She has published numerous books and articles. Her latest book, The Story of Our Lives: Homo sapiens’ secrets of Success, was published by World Scientific Press and has won international awards. She lives in Israel with her spouse, their 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
