Language Course for Scientists

"Communicating Effectively in English: Building Linguistic and Cultural Strategies for Scientists"

 

This course is an English boot-camp specially designed to meet the linguistic and cultural demands of international postdocs. This tailored curriculum spans over four weeks. Week one starts with a day-and-a-half, in-person bootcamp (June 3-4). The course then shifts to online learning for eight instructional hours spaced over two weeks, which then culminates with another day-and-a-half, in-person bootcamp (June 24-25). Throughout the four weeks, learners will participate in a variety of interactive activities targeting topics such as:

  •     Cultural Intelligence (CQ)
  •     The Importance of Small Talk
  •     Networking and Presenting in an International Context
  •     Making your Message Clear
  •     The Importance of Collaboration
  •     English for Scientists- Telling a Story with Data
  •     Developing your Scientist Voice
  •     Strategies for Self-Reflection
  •     Email Etiquette
  •     Linguistic Repair Strategies    
  •     Linguistic and Cultural Strategies for Video and Tele-conferencing

This course is designed and facilitated by language connectED, an education consulting firm based in the USA. With a focus on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), language connectEd works with non-profits and academic institutions to develop and facilitate custom-made curricula to meet learners’ needs. They’ve recently developed curriculum, programming and tutorials for the Biomedical Postdoctoral Program at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and at Nihon Koden Corporation, among others.

    • 2nd and 3rd week of June - Online bootcamp - Total of 8 Hours
    • June 24 (8:30-12:30) and June 25 (9:00-17:30) - In-person bootcamp

    • Mallory Fix, owner of language connectED, and a faculty member at the English Language Programs (ELP) at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and Temple University.
    • Rebecca Toner, Becky, has been teaching English for over 15 years, with her most recent work focusing on EAP and English for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Becky is a faculty member at the University of Pennsylvania’s English Language Programs (ELP).
