From the Lab to the Rooftop and Back to Okinawa: Operational Stability of Perovskite Solar Cells with Open Hardware (Perovskino + ParaSol)

Dr. Emilio J. Juarez-Perez, Senior ARAID Researcher at the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragón (INMA, CSIC–University of Zaragoza)

Abstract:
Halide perovskite photovoltaics have matched silicon in efficiency, but not yet in lifetime. In this talk I will connect two ends of that problem. The first is chemistry uncovered during my postdoc at OIST: hybrid perovskites degrade through irreversible gas release (CH3I + NH3 from MAPbI3; sym-triazine + HCN from FAPbI3), detectable from rooftop-relevant temperatures and later confirmed by broadband rotational spectroscopy. The second is instrumentation: Perovskino, our open-source Arduino-based maximum-power-point tracker and ParaSol, our outdoor testing platform in Zaragoza, where a carbon-based cell on porcelain stoneware has now operated for more than 430 days with no measurable loss. I will close with a proposal: pairing the semi-arid climate of Zaragoza with the subtropical marine climate of Okinawa as complementary, near-orthogonal stress tests for perovskite stability.

Short bio:
Emilio J. Juarez-Perez is a Senior ARAID Researcher at the Institute of Nanoscience and Materials of Aragón (INMA, CSIC–University of Zaragoza), where he leads the Open Solar Stability Lab. Trained as a chemical engineer and holding a PhD in chemistry, he has worked on perovskite photovoltaics since 2013 and was a postdoctoral scholar at OIST (2015–2019), where he identified key thermal degradation pathways of hybrid perovskites. He has authored ~80 articles (h-index 40, ~10.000 citations), holds patent WO/2022/054780, and serves as editor of Materials Science and Engineering B. His current work focuses on outdoor operational stability, open-hardware instrumentation, and building-integrated photovoltaics.
