Development of novel electrochemical biosensor technologies and translation into products for use in the real world
Abstract:
Professor Damion Corrigan FRSC is LGC Professor in Measurement Science for Health at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) and Director of the Centre for Advanced Measurement Science and Health Translation. His research focuses on electrochemical biosensors and diagnostic technologies for healthcare, biotechnology, environmental monitoring and One Health applications. Alongside his academic role, he is actively involved in translating research into commercial impact through several spinout and early-stage companies, including Aureum Diagnostics, Microplate Dx, Biomarx, Rapisense, Cadence Dx and ‘the BiomedShed’. These ventures are developing technologies spanning biosafety monitoring, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, molecular cancer testing, liquid biopsy, detecting antibiotics in milk, cardiovascular diagnostics and low-cost electrodes and connectors. In the process of commercialising his work, Professor Corrigan has been involved in raising over £7.5 million in private investment and his work has been acknowledged with the ‘Academic Entrepreneur of the Year 2023’ prize (Praxis Auril KE Awards) and a Mid-Career Research Medal (2025) from the Royal Society of Chemistry Analytical Section.
The talk will cover both the fundamental research done in the laboratory to develop new electrochemical measurements and the translation of these devices from laboratory based biosensors into commercially viable biosensing platforms.
