Description

Into the Darkness:  The Hunt for Forbidden Excitons

U.S.:  Thursday, February 18 @ 7:00 PM EST

Japan:  Friday, February 19 @ 9:00 AM JST

Over the past decade, scientists have seen hints of the behind-the-scenes existence of the forbidden dark excitons, through their effects on their optically active cousins. Recently at OIST, after a many-years-long effort in the development of novel experimental instrumentation, the dark exciton was directly imaged, revealing the surprising dominance of these invisible particles after photoexcitation. This first visualization has the potential to revolutionize opto-electronic technology in two-dimensional semiconductors from quantum computing to LEDs. Join us to hear directly from Dr. Keshav Dani, Associate Professor at OIST and head of the Femtosecond Spectroscopy Unit, to learn about his recent groundbreaking research on the dark exciton, which was just published in the December 4, 2020 issue of Science, one of the leading scientific journals that is produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
