Title: From OPCs to Oligodendrocytes – Understanding Myelin Plasticity in the Adult Brain

Abstract: Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are located throughout the mature CNS, where they proliferate and generate new oligodendrocytes throughout life.  In health, adult-born oligodendrocytes add new myelin to the brain to facilitate learning and memory, and in response to demyelinating disease, they add new myelin to remyelinate the demyelinated axons and restore circuit function.  A greater understanding of how oligodendrocyte addition is regulated in the mature CNS, could allow us to improve learning and memory function and promote myelin repair in people with demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis.  One of the key physiological regulators of adult oligodendrogenesis is neuronal activity, and this seminar explores the capacity of a non-invasive form of neural stimulation, to enhance oligodendrocyte addition and myelination of the mature CNS.
