Title: The physics of superfluids

Abstract: Superfluidity is the amazing ability of certain states of matter to flow without resistance. This property has recently been observed in atomic gases that are cooled down close to  absolute zero, into a state of matter called a Bose-Einstein condensate. The wave-like properties the atoms pick up in this state allow for the observation of quantum properties on a macroscopic scale and they are therefore ideal to investigate the physics of superfluids. For example, Bose-Einstein condensates respond to rotation by developing whirlpools, or vortices that are well defined, with their strength, or circulation always quantised. In this talk I will introduce the area and discuss some of the currently interesting research aspects in a way that they will be accessible to the wider OIST community.

Refreshments will be served afterwards. We hope to see you there!
