Title: Low-temperature plasma-based synthesis of nanoparticles

Speaker: Prof. Andrey Shukurov

Affiliation: Charles University

Abstract:

This lecture reviews the research activities performed at the Department of Macromolecular Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic in the field of the production of nanoparticles (NPs) by plasma-based methods including the utilization of gas aggregation cluster sources. Plasma polymerization of volatile organic precursors, rf magnetron sputtering of polymers and dc magnetron sputtering of metals will be discussed as powerful tools for the fabrication of plasma polymer, metal and core@shell NPs. Examples will be given including plasma polymer NPs with tailored chemical composition (nitrogen-containing, carboxyl-rich, organosilicon and fluorocarbon plasma polymers) and metallic NPs (Ag, Au, Pt, Cu, Ti, Al). In-flight synthesis of heterogeneous core@shell NPs will be presented including fabrication of Cu@C:H, Cu@W and Ni@Ti NPs. Characterization of the metal NP growth by in situ X-ray scattering will be presented. Advances and challenges in this field will be discussed.

Biography:

Associate professor at the Department of Macromolecular Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic. Awarded Ing from the State University of Chemistry and Technology in Ivanovo, Russia in 1995, PhD and Doc from the Charles University in 2003 and 2011, respectively. In 2002-2003, joined the University of Illinois at Chicago, USA as a research assistant and in 2005-2007 worked at Nagoya University, Japan as an assistant professor. The research focuses on fabrication of novel materials with nanoscale structure by low-temperature plasma-based methods.

We hope to see many of you there.
