Title: Understanding and shaping implicit brain functions that support physical and mental skills in sports

Abstract:  The superior ability of athletes to control their physical skills and mental states is largely supported by brain functions of which they are not even aware, i.e., implicit brain functions. Our goal is to elucidate how the implicit brain functions work in the real sporting situations. To this end, we analyze body movements and various biological information of athletes without interfering with their play in realistic environments, such as real games or similar situations. We have clarified how top athletes in baseball, softball, formula car racing, snowboarding, e-sports, and other sports adopt strategies that are adapted to the challenges posed by the competition and their own characteristics. Furthermore, we are developing methods to enhance their implicit brain functions underlying physical and mental skills. In this talk, I will introduce some examples of our achievements and ongoing projects.
