Title: Functional anatomy of mouse parietal cortex with wide field-of-view two-photon calcium imaging.

Abstract: The brain is a complex system consisting of many neurons. For the understanding of the brain, it is necessary to record as many neurons as possible inside the brain in an awake behaving animal. Recently, it has been realized by the technical development of high density electrodes and two photon imaging. For example, at the Smith laboratory of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to which I belongs, tens of thousands of neurons can be simultaneously recorded in the brain of a head-fixed mouse using a custom-made two-photon microscope (Stirman et al., Nat Biotecht. 2016). The increase in the number of simultaneous recordings of the brain is exponential, and it can be expected that this number can be increased to around 1 million by combining the current highest level of technology. In this presentation, I first discuss such broadening of two-photon imaging and its technical estimate. In the second half, I will introduce the functional structural properties of the parietal association cortex and its surrounding areas obtained by wide field-of-view two-photon calcium imaging of parietal lobes during a decision making task.
