Join the OIST Foundation for a presentation on the science and art of Okinawa traditional bashōfu weaving. Bashōfu weaving, making fabric from banana tree fibers, has a long and storied history in Okinawa and via this virtual event you will have the rare opportunity to hear directly from a scientist and artist about the ways in which bashōfu is a bridge that weaves together these disciplines. The event is being held on Tanabata, July 7, in which legend has it that it is the only day in which two deities (represented by the stars Vega and Altair) who are in love can come together. Just as the stars weave together that day, our presentation will show how textile weaving brings together science & art, traditions, and people.

Dr. Nomura is a Science and Technology Associate at OIST with a long and deep interest in textile science. She has led research and exhibitions on bashōfu at OIST.
Ms. Roosmarijn Pallandt, is a Dutch artist who uses both textile and photography as her medium.
