Abstract

Biodiversity plays a central role in humankind’s interaction with the biosphere, lying at the heart of all ecosystem structure and functioning. Biodiversity describes the variability and connectivity of life across different levels (from bacteria to plants and animals) and dimensions (from genetic to ecological and from taxonomic to functional):

(1) Since biodiversity covers genomic information, it allows reconstructing the past natural history of species and communities.

(2) Since biodiversity reflects the genetic variability of species, it governs their present-day adaptability.

(3) Since biodiversity determines which species coexist and how they interact, it underpins ecological processes and emergent patterns.

(4) Since biodiversity can enhance ecosystem productivity, it is important for managing wild and cultured living resources.

(5) Since biodiversity influences how redundantly ecological functions are represented within ecosystems, it shapes their resilience to anthropogenic impacts.

(6) And finally, since biodiversity inspires a sense of awe and wonder about the richness and complexity of the natural world, it contributes to human wellbeing and our respect for nature.

This workshop will bring together practitioners and enthusiasts of biodiversity research from Tohoku University and OIST to illuminate this fascinating theme from multiple angles, with the aim of
