Dr. Ruri Hidema
Department of Chemical Science and Engineering, Kobe University.

Ruri Hidema is an associate professor of the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering at Kobe University. Her research interest is in complex fluid mechanics, rheology, and soft matter. She has focused on the characteristic flow behaviors of complex fluids in multi length scales. Her research has been recognized by many awards from Japanese Ministry, Japanese and International academic society, including the “Commendation for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology”, the “Incentive Award for Research by The Society of Rheology Japan”, and the “Incentive Award for Research by The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan”, etc. She established a Working Party of Dilute Solution Rheology in the Society of Rheology, Japan in 2013, and she is now managing the working party.

Energy transfer in two-dimensional turbulent flow affected by polymers and surfactants

Abstract

Turbulent drag reduction caused by polymer solution or worm-like micellar solution are enhanced in extensional flow. Two-dimensional (2D) turbulent flow realized by flowing soap films is an ideal experimental set-up to study rheological drag reduction in a 2D environment, free from mean shear. The presentation will begin with the variation of energy transfer in polymer doped 2D turbulent flow observed by the scaling index of 2D flow fluctuations. I will discuss variation of vortex shedding affected by polymer additives and worm-like micelles. I will then discuss turbulent statistics calculated by local velocity fields in 2D turbulent flow. The effects of polymers and worm-like micelles are compared in terms of their deformation and relaxation processes.
