The causes and consequences of cell-to-cell heterogeneity in growth, mutational impact, and drug resistance
Even in the absence of genetic variation, neither chemotherapy nor antibiotics not antifungals kill 100% of the target cells. Drug-insensitive subpopulations remain a significant barrier to the effective elimination of pathogenic cells. Why do identical drug treatments, and even identical mutations, have different outcomes in different single isogenic cells? While the molecular mechanisms by which individual genetic mutations cause resistance to specific drugs are well established, the molecular mechanisms responsible for non-genetic drug resistance, are less well understood. I will talk about our work in budding yeast exploring the mechanisms by which single population generates phenotypic diversity.
