Abstract
Biological effects of ionizing radiation depend on the dose rate. Low dose rate (LDR) radiation needs a higher total dose to achieve the same biological effects as irradiated by acute irradiation. We try to answer unsolved questions about the risk and molecular mechanisms in response to LDR irradiation, especially lower than 1 Gy/hour. We hypothesized that the roles and significance of DNA double strand break (DSB) repair are different in LDR radiation, compared to acute radiation exposure. Our results presented that a defect in DSB repair results in enhanced radiosensitivty and genome instability in mammalian cells after LDR irradiation.
