Speakers

Nonno Hasegawa (OIST PhD Student, Year of 2020)

Nonno was born and raised in the pacific coast of Japan. She went to an international school in Tokyo and went to Canada for her Bachelor degree in biochemistry. She then found OIST through a colleague and came here as an intern in 2019. She fell in love with Okinawa immediately and returned as a PhD student from 2020. Here at OIST she initially wanted to work on honey bee health as she had 3 years of research in this field in her Bachelor, however she has switched topics to work in the integrative community ecology unit and focus on host-parasite ecology. She likes to go out to venture for waves to be surfed in Okinawa and travel around Japan.

Julian Katzke (OIST PhD Student, Year of 2017)

Julian completed his Master's in Paleontology in Germany where he’s from. Before coming to OIST, he started to work on ants. He was then drawn to OIST by the integrative research on ant evolution that happens in the Biodiversity and Biocomplexity Unit. In 2018, he started rotations in OIST labs as a PhD student with the goal of switching completely from Paleontology towards Evolutionary Biology. This has led him to now study evolutionary patterns in the diversification of ant mouthparts. These managed to evolve functions comparable to scissors, tweezers, mouse-traps and more and there is still a lot to discover on how this happened. On Okinawa, he likes to be outside chasing waves and enjoying the flexibility of a student schedule.
