Description

Satoumi Conference in Onna village 2019 ; From Satoumi in Okinawa
"Aiming to be the most coral-friendly island in the world"

The purpose of the conference
Satoumi Conference in Onna village 2019 is held with the themes of “Co-creating the value of Satoumi” and “Nurturing Satoumi vitalizing Okinawa’s characteristics”. In “Co-creating the value of Satoumi” fishers are main actors, and the “co-creation” includes: Satoumi learning and marine education with children; cooperation with coops and processing companies; collaboration with local and city residents; partnership with municipalities; cooperation between scientists and local stakeholders. Onna village (municipality) stated “ Coral Village Declaration” in 2018 and was selected one of the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) Future Cities in 2019. There the fisheries cooperative, processing companies, coops, the municipality and local people collaborate to nurture Satoumi. Hence Onna village is the best place to discuss this theme.

Nurturing Satoumi and Okinawa’s characteristics include: to conserve and restore coral reefs; vital coordination with sustainable tourism industry; linkages among forests, villages, rivers, and the sea; characteristics of remote islands, etc. Okinawa goes toward sustainable development maintaining rich, beautiful nature and environment. In the conference, focusing on this Okinawa’s principle, such matters will be discussed as: deepening Satoumi concept; finding diverse actors for nurturing Satoumi; collaboration among diverse organizations and groups; funding mechanisms to sustain Satoumi; Satoumi learning and cultural exchange over multi generations; internationalization of Satoumi. Then clearing common issues in various places, we share these matters and transmit them to the world.
