Title:

Polarization vision in crustaceans and cephalopods

Abustract:

Many species of marine and intertidal invertebrates make use of the polarization of light for visual tasks such as detecting predators and prey and for communication. But studying how animals make use of this property of light is challenging, both because humans are largely insensitive to it, and because of methodological constraints. The Ecology of Vision lab at Bristol has developed a range of tools for investigating polarization vision in animals in the lab and in the wild and has used these to uncover mechanisms and functions of polarization vision in various stomatopod, decapod crab and cephalopod species.
