About the workshop:

In this workshop, participants will learn and practice strategies for successfully answering common interview questions. Participants will also practice giving and receiving feedback during practice interviews.

Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify 2 types of interview questions—direct, behavioral—and the appropriate strategy for answering each.
  2. Participants will practice answering common interview questions.

Supplies:

  • Handout with interview types and strategies
  • Interview practice rubric

Outline:

  1. Introductions and icebreaker.
  2. Introduce types of interviews.
  3. Discuss types of interview questions: direct and behavioral.
  4. Introduce strategies for answering common interview questions.
    • “Tell me about yourself”
    • “Tell me about your research”
    • “Tell me about a time you ….”
  5. Practice answering common interview questions with a partner.
  6. Provide feedback with rubric

About Instructors:

  1. Kristen K. Mighty, PhD

    • is the Senior Program Coordinator for Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) at Northwestern University, USA. In this role, she manages the resources, support and programming that the OPA provides to the approximately 900 postdoctoral fellows, across the Evanston and Chicago campuses at Northwestern. The OPA is also involved in a wide range of activities for postdoctoral trainees, including recruitment, professional development services, institutional policy advisement, tracking and data management.

    • Dr. Mighty earned her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Chemistry from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, PhD in Life Sciences and Masters in Public Health from Northwestern University.  She completed her postdoctoral training at Rush University Medical Center in the Immunology-Microbiology department prior to her role in the OPA.

  2. Mearah Quinn-Brauner, PhD

    • is an Assistant Director of Student Career Advising at Northwestern Career Advancement, USA. In this role, Dr. Quinn-Brauner supports doctoral student from across the disciplines,  helping them connect their experience to professional opportunities both within and outside of academia. Before joining Northwestern University, Mearah worked with graduate students at the University of Chicago.

    • Dr. Quinn-Brauner  earned her Bachelor’s degree in English at Oberlin College and her Master’s and PhD in English Literature from the University of Pennsylvania. She has over 10 years of experience supporting graduate and undergraduate students in a variety of capacities, including as a teacher of writing, literature, and film; as a writing coach; and as a teaching mentor.
