SHIMA 2024

Workshop Overview

SHIMA is an outreach project that aims to educate high school students about the sustainability of island ecosystems and cultures.

The concept of SHIMA is based on these interrelated pillars: "science education outreach activities", "engagement between OIST scientists and neighboring communities", and "understanding sustainable island ecosystems and cultures". It is a workshop for high school students addressing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and island sustainability.

SHIMA 2024 is supported by U.S. General Consulate Naha and Japan Transocean Airways, Inc. JTA supports the travel expenses of high school students living on remote islands to this program.

Eligble participants High school students living in Okinawa (27 students)
Registration fee Free registration (accommodation included)
※ Travel expenses are provided for participants from Okinawa remote islands.
Language English and Japanese
Application deadline June 30th, 2024 (Sun)
※ Application will start on June 3rd, 2024
※ The selection result will be announced via email by the end of July 2024. Please check your settings to ensure that you can receive emails from @oist.jp domain.
Application method Please submit a personal statement (within 150 words in English) on why you wish to participate in this workshop.

Additional Information

【Meeting point】
The meeting point for the workshop will be at OIST.
Participants from Okinawa main island will need to arrange their own transportation to OIST (August 13th) and from OIST Seaside House (August 15th).

【Accommodation and Meals】
The workshop is of 2 days and 3 nights (4 days and 3 nights for participants from remote islands)..
Accommodation and meals during the workshop will be provided by OIST. Participants will stay at OIST Seaside House. Map.
