[Seminar] Climate change and cumulative impact in Arctic ecosystems

Prof. Raul Primicerio: Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway

Abstract

In the Arctic, the rate of warming is more than twice the global average. Accordingly, Arctic ecosystems have shown rapid and substantial ecological responses. During the last two decades species have changed their distribution, abundance and phenology, leading to a borealization of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The climate-driven ecological change causes a reconfiguration of Arctic food-webs. The reorganisation affects ecosystem functioning and vulnerability, exposing these fragile systems to biological invasions and expanding human activities. The quick ecological transition challenges traditional management practice and calls for climate adaptation of human activities. Lessons learned in a rapidly warming Arctic can help us prepare in other regions of the world where the impact of climate change is less visible and imminent.

Biosketch

Prof. Raul Primicerio is professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UiT, The Arctic University of Norway. His work covers evolutionary, population and community ecology of aquatic systems. His present research focus is on the cumulative impact of multiple anthropogenic stressors.
