Research Focus

Panos' research focuses on the theoretical elucidation of fundamental processes related to nanotechnology such as nanoparticle growth, coalescence, cluster-support interaction, etc., and the effect of structure on optical, chemical, electronic, magnetic, and other properties. For five years he has led the experimental Nanoparticles by Design Unit at OIST (under Prof M Sowwan), utilising cluster beam deposition for the design of tailored nanoparticles and their integration in various nanoarchitectures. Applications include (but are not limited to) gas- and bio-sensors, battery electrodes, and hydrogen storage, yielding a number of publications in esteemed peer-reviewed journals (Communications Materials, Advanced Energy Materials, Advanced Science, Advanced Functional Materials, ACS Nano, Physical Review B, etc.), as well as patented inventions and projects for the commercialisation of the invented technologies.  Also, he is interested in determining the mechanical properties of both nano- and bulk materials in the field of nuclear materials and radiation damage.

Short Bio and Career Summary

Panos was born and raised in Thessaloniki, Greece. He graduated from the Physics Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2000 and the Postgraduate Course "Physics of Materials" in 2002. He did his MSc thesis ("Crystallographic Aspects of Phase Transformations in Titanium", supervised by RC Pond) at the University of Liverpool, UK, where he returned in 2005 to do his EPSRC funded PhD on "Computer Simulation of Dislocation Interaction with Radiation-Induced Obstacles in Iron", supervised by DJ Bacon. He has worked  as a Research Associate for NCSR Demokritos in Athens, Greece, and the University of Greenwich, UK. Since 2011 he is also collaborating with the University of Helsinki as a Visiting Researcher. Since November 2012 he has worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the "Nanoparticles by Design" Unit at OIST Graduate University, whereas in March 2016 he officially took over as Unit Leader for the same research Unit.

Since the Unit was disbanded in 2019, he has been working at OIST as an Independent Researcher, collaborating with various groups around the world, and maintaining the Unit's reputation and momentum. In this capacity, he single-handedly organised and hosted the ACBD workshop at OIST in October 2019.

Since 2020 he has held the position of Visiting Assistant Professor at the Particle Technology Laboratory at ETH Zurich, and that of Visiting Researcher at the Center for Atomic and Molecular Technologies at Osaka University, where, as of September 2021, he holds the position of Specially Appointed Assistant Professor.

Panos is a peer reviewer for 39 international journals (54 articles) and 2 national grants. He has given 10 plenary/keynote/invited talks and 23 oral/poster presentations to international conferences and events, whereas he organised/chaired sessions in 7 international conferences.
