Title:

Orientational dynamics of Brownian elongated and chiral particles in microchannel flow

Abstract:

Understanding the rotational dynamics of non-spherical microscopic particles in microchannel flow is nontrivial due to the interplay of rotational Brownian motion and orientation-dependent response to shear. We will first discuss how the dynamics of Brownian rods deviates from the classical non-Brownian Jefferey dynamics, and how the orientational persistence can be quantified. Furthermore, we will show how chiral elongated particles break the left-right orientational symmetry in the channel and discuss recent experimental and theoretical investigations on flowing micro-printed helices attached to a spherical head. Finally we will consider the consequence on active particles such as swimming E coli bacteria in bulk and in the presence of walls.
