New Paper: Do Digital Hugs Work? (2023-08-09)
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we were led to social isolation, restricting some from physical touch and social gatherings. In this article, Dr. Mark James goes into details on how some may find care and connection through digitally mediated interactions, and the experience of 'digital hugs'.
New Preprint: The Energetics of Locomotion (2023-07-11)
Dr. Andrés Mejía presents a biomechanical framework for studying human and animal movement across the landscape in his latest preprint on bioRxiv. He developed an associated statistical library for R — lbmech — to make it easy for behavioral scientists to perform empirically-grounded least-cost path analyses much faster and more efficiently than current methods.
New Preprint: Reviewing Neurophenomenology (2023-07-05)
Dr. Tom Froese and ECSU Research Intern alumnus Jon Sykes takek a critical look at neurophenomenology’s revolutionary ambitions in their recent preprint on PsyArXiv (in French). They conclude that despite progress, its key claim that lived experience matters to brain activity still needs more support.
New Preprint: The Neolithic in Lower Central America (2023-06-12)
Dr. Andrés Mejía presents a meta-analysis of the Neolithic Transition in Costa Rica and Panama in his latest preprint on SocArXiv (in Spanish). Through a Bayesian re-analysis of 161 radiocarbon dates from 39 sites, he argues that ceramic technology existed in the region as early as 4840-4144 BC, one-to-three millenia before the currently-accepted date.
New Paper: Introducing Irruption Theory (2023-05-02)
Dr. Tom Froese recently published "Irruption Theory: A Novel Conceptualization of the Enactive Account of Motivated Activity" in the jounral Entropy. Irruption theory is novel theory about how agency interacts with the physical world that's an alternative to prevailing hypotheses.

Natalya recently presented and published her work in IEEE. Most research on the self-optimization model has focused on network sizes on the order of a hundred nodes. This paper demonstrates that the process can be scaled up over several orders of magnitude with comparable results. Link to paper here.

Participating in an upcoming symposium in Tokyo
Dr. Froese will be participating in a upcoming symposium on "Body Schema, Arts, and Social Participation" in Tokyo, Japan. He will be giving a talk titled "Enaction as irruptions and body memory", where he presents a fresh perspective on the relationship between conscious body image and unconscious body schema through irruption theory.

September's birthday celebration (2022-10-05)
This month, our unit celebrated the birthday of two members, Yi-Shan and Eric. Perfect occasion to highlight their project in the unit. As PhD students, Eric is studying interbrain synchronization using computational and experimental approaches while Yi-Shan's project mainly works on examining information synergy in the football context. While analyzing football match datas and the coordination of football players with EEG hyperscanning, she wants to reveal a quantitative way to describe team behaviors in multi-agent sports.
Our unit participated in the time capsule project! (2022-10-05)
Our unit took part of the OIST Time Capsule community project that conclude the celebration of OIST's 10th Anniversary. The purpose of this project is to take polaroid pictures of OIST's members across campus and keep them in a Time Capsule that will be opened for the institute's 30th Anniversary, in 2041! Great opportunity for the unit to show our best smiles and update our team's photos.

Kazuma Takada gave a presentation on "The Design and Scalability of Online Experiment Platform" at Young Perceptionists' Seminar 2022 (YPS2022) held on August 21-22, 2022 in Japan.
The experimental platform he is implementing allows for an easy division (experiment design by researchers and development by engineers), speed to publish experiments, and accurate data collection. He aims to design a framework that goes beyond previous online experimental platforms, focusing on the dual perspectives of the researcher and the engineer.
Workshop - Re-conceiving enaction as the irruption of consciousness

Embodied Rationality Through Game Theoretic Glasses: An Empirical Point of Contact
The paper develops a game theoretic description of the Perceptual Crossing Paradigm, making it possible to evaluate how game theory currently accounts for -- or fails to account for -- the features of human behavior that Perceptual Crossing elicits. It then argues that Perceptual Crossing can now be used to empirically ground a debate between the enactive notion of embodied rationality and the classical notion of rationality-as-consistency.

New paper from our group's postdoc Ekaterina Sangati. This study of joint action casts doubt on the pervasiveness of co-representation, and instead points to a role for "offloading" of cognitive processes onto the resources of the body and the environment.

On 10th of December, 2021, our unit was excited to launch this new adventure in collaboration with FC Ryukyu, which will look at the relationship between interpersonal coordination and team performance. In this discussion, our staff philosopher Mark M. James, joined a panel on the topic of adjusting to life at this phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. The panel spoke about how people are responding to the pandemic to manage their own wellbeing, how helping others can assist in that process, and the kinds of larger scale and longer term interventions that are necessary now.

Enactive Foundation Workshop held
On Friday the 1st of October we held a workshop within our unit that was organised around clarifying what the core themes of interest within our unit are. People are coming from a lot of different backgrounds into our unit and one challenge we face is developing a conceptual common ground. Part of the motivation of this workshop then was to to make the core themes explicit so that we have a number of well articulated topics that we will continue to refine through our work and through our conversations.

In the paper we consider the reduction in brain size associated with the transition from the Paleolithic to Neolithic. Is it indicative of less cognition? Using agent modeling, we show how it could actually be indicative of socially extended cognition.

Open position for Postdoctoral Fellow (Project Researcher) (Tsuji Laboratory)
The IRCN Babylab (Tsuji lab) at University of Tokyo is seeking a postdoctoral candidate for the transdisciplinary project “Tracking developing sensitivity to dyadic interactions” in collaboration with the Softbank Beyond AI Institute and Tom Froese (Embodied Cognitive Science unit, OIST). The goal of this project is to develop a gaze-based minimal virtual reality paradigm to identify infants’ sensitivity to real-time, gaze-mediated dyadic interactions.

New article out! Our model leads to a new hypothesis about the function of sleep in the nematode worm. "Unsupervised Learning Facilitates Neural Coordination Across the Functional Clusters of the C. elegans Connectome". It was published in Frontiers in Robotics and AI and can be found here.
Christin Puthur won Fake Life Recognition Contest Award
Phd. Student Christin Puthur, won the the first Place of the Fake Life Recognition Contest Award, with her work done during her rotation in the Embodied Cognitive Science Unit.
KICKS 2020 Application was granted
Dr. Froese's project proposal "Gaze-based minimal virtual reality paradigm for tracking developing sensitivity to dyadic interactions" was selected for funding. The project will be conducted in collaboration with Dr. Sho Tsuji at the International Research Center for Neurointelligence of the University of Tokyo.

The new article titled "Investigating real-time social interaction in pairs of adolescents with the Perceptual Crossing Experiment" reveals in the largest perceptual crossing study yet, that when adolescents engage in mutually responsive embodied interaction their social awareness is heightened.

We are launching a new conference series: the "International Conference on Embodied Cognitive Science" (ECogS)! Please find attached the conference poster for the inaugural conference, ECogS 2020.

Presentation at the Neural Oscillation Conference
Ana Lucia will give a presentation at the Neural Oscillation Conference 2019: Towards Integrative Understanding of Human Nature, which will take place in Kyoto, Nov. 17-19. Her poster is on the topic: "Inter-brain synchrony of neural oscillations: implications for our understanding of human nature".

Students will participate in ICSB 2019
Two of our students, Ana and Alejandro, will each present a poster featuring their thesis research during the "Systems Biology for Neurosciences and Neural Circuits" session of the 20th International Conference on Systems Biology.
Commentary on different constraints on brain evolution
Fish are an ancient and diverse group of vertrebrates, which makes them an interesting comparative group for studies of mammalian brain evolution. However, caution is required given their distinctive embodiment and environment: cold-blooded bodies and life-long growth in an oxygen-poor habitat.

First Visiting Research Students arrived!
Welcome to OIST!
Today four new Visiting Research Students, Alejandro, Ana, Caro, and Itzel, arrived to our unit. They will spend this quarter working in the unit in order to finish their dissertations, which they had begun in the 4E Cognition Group at UNAM in Mexico City under the supervision of Dr. Froese.
