Short description:
Effective science communication is necessary in fostering ongoing conversations between scientists, policy makers, and the general public. The ability to communicate clearly and vividly can also help with securing funding, collaborating across disciplines, and strengthening research. The challenge is for scientists to establish a connection with their audience and be clear and engaging without oversimplifying the science. This interactive presentation suggests tools and examples to help scientists communicate in ways that resonate with people outside of their field about what they do and why it matters. The session will cover general principles in how to craft clear and conversational statements, and engage with your audience.

About the speaker:
Dr. Christine O’Connell is an Assistant Professor of Science Communicating at the School of Journalism and Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University. Dr. O’Connell is an expert in the field of science communication, policy, engagement, and women in STEM. She was the founding Associate Director at the Alda Center where she helped create and build the Center and its curriculum to international acclaim. She led the growth of many of the Alda Center’s flagship programs and has trained thousands of scientists worldwide to be more effective communicators. She currently teaches and builds research and curriculum initiatives with a focus on best practices in Science Communication, Science Policy, Art and Science, Environmental Communication, and Women in STEM. She received her BS from Cornell University, and PhD in Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University. In 2018, Dr. O’Connell was named a Women InPower fellow, a fellowship for rising leaders in business, nonprofits, law, arts, technology, philanthropy, science, and higher education.
