Target Audience: Postdocs, Staff Scientists and Group Leaders. Students will have a separate session.
Session format: 2-part Interactive workshop
When: Tuesday May 22, 2018 and Thursday May 24, 2018 with three modules delivered on each day from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm.
Where: Location will be revealed to all registered participants.

Course Objectives:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to...
- Define the term “curriculum”; identify and articulate the components essential for creating a great curriculum; and critique sample syllabi or curriculum to identify their strengths and weaknesses when measured against the standards of great curricula;
- Define the term “active learning”; articulate its importance in promoting student learning; describe methods to engage students from diverse backgrounds; and use established rubrics to assess whether examples of teaching meet these standards
- Articulate different modes of modes of assessment to measure student learning and mastery; for written assessments, be able to describe the differences between different question formats; apply strategies to the development of effective multiple choice questions; and, demonstrate an understanding of these principles through critical evaluation of sample assessment items

About the Speaker:
Dr. Jason Heustis is a Lecturer in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology (BCMP) and a Graduate Curriculum, Professional Development and Evaluation Specialist for the Program in Graduate Education (PGE) at Harvard Medical School (HMS). At HMS, Jason teaches graduate students, develops curriculum for new and existing courses in conjunction with other educators, and assesses graduate student learning and development. He also develops para-curricular training opportunities to support the divergent career pathways of doctoral students in the biomedical sciences, both for trainees interested in academic paths and for those pursuing options from a growing range of career trajectories. He has previously taught at the undergraduate level at Harvard University, Suffolk University and Tufts University.
Jason received an Honors B.S. in Biology and an Honors B.A. in Chemistry and Political Science from Saint Louis University (MO) and received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Biology from Tufts University (Medford, MA), before completing a post-doctoral Curriculum Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. Jason is originally from Belize City, Belize.
