Title:
Mathematics and Art
Abstract:
Through history we see, in many periods, the need for having physical models to explain mathematical concepts. In some cases artists got involved and were asked to make drawings to illustrate mathematical ideas. Maybe the best example is the illustrations Leonardo da Vinci made for Luca Pacioli, the mathematician who wrote the book about polyhedra “Divina Proportione”. The actual making of the physical model is studied in detail by the artist Albrecht Durer. In his book “Underweising der Messung” he shows how to make 3D models starting with 2D plans. “Making” the models can help to understand the mathematics behind the object even better than ”looking at” the models. In the presentation/workshop I want to show and explain some of my “double-polyhedron” models. And of course we will make the models.
