[Topology and Geometry Seminar] "Ribbon and string representations of finite subgroups of SU(2)" by Professor Scott Carter

Date

Wednesday, December 5, 2018 - 16:00 to 17:00

Location

Lab 3 Room B700

Description

The groups that we will study are the quaternions, the dicyclic groups, and the binary tetrahedral, octahedral, and icosahedral groups. These are $2$-fold extensions of symmetry groups of polygons and polyhedra. Some are also matrix groups over finite fields. We will demonstrate permutation representations that allow one to multiply them visually. Furthermore the projections to their $3$-dimensional rotational representations are apparent via these representations.

In as much as possible, I will let the audience know how to find such representations and why they might be of a more broad interest.

The work is based upon soon to be released paper with Yongju Bae and Byeorhi Kim.
