Title: A world from a sheet of paper

Speaker: Tadashi Tokieda, Stanford University

Abstract: 
Starting from just a sheet of paper, by folding, stacking, crumpling, tearing, we shall explore a rich variety of phenomena, from magic tricks and geometry through elasticity and the traditional Japanese art of origami to medical devices and ‘h-principle’.  Much of the lecture consists of table-top demos, which you can later try with family and friends.

Profile: 
Tadashi Tokieda is a professor at Stanford.  He grew up as a painter in Japan, became a classical philologist (not to be confused with philosopher) in France, worked a little as a plumber, earned a PhD in pure mathematics at Princeton, and has since been doing applied mathematics around the world.  He is also active in outreach, especially via the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences and the YouTube channel Numberphile.  At the quadrennial International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) T^2 spoke in 2018, 2022, 2026.
