Abstract:
The chemistry of half-sandwich arene–ruthenium(II) complexes has fascinated the scientific community during recent past because of their potential applications in diverse areas. These complexes exhibit piano-stool geometry about the ruthenium(II) centre. Arene ligand present in these complexes, considered as spectator ligand, are relatively inert to substitution reactions and stabilizes the complex and protect the metal centre Ru(II) from oxidation to Ru(III). Other coordination sites opposite to the arene ligand can be occupied by N-, O-, S- or P-donor ligands and among these, the nitrogen-donor ligands particularly, bidentate ones have drawn special attention. It has been established that ancillary ligands play a decisive role in determining the usefulness of these complexes. Further, their properties can be fine-tuned by adjusting the size and electronic nature of ligands and boost its overall performance. During past 30 years we have been working towar examining the reactivity of arene ruthenium complexes with diverse ligands and exploring multi-faceted value of the resulting complexes. Through this talk an attempt will be made to highlight multifaceted facets of arene ruthenium complexes developed in my research group.
