Description

Join us for the OIST NetCafé, a casual information session for those who are interested in learning more about our research internship and PhD program. The session will be conducted in English. The session will start with OIST general introduction, PhD and Research Internship admission process, financial support and student life. This time, we have invited two current OIST PhD students, who will give you insights into the study and research environment at OIST from different stages of their PhD studies.

Speakers

Clea Laouar (PhD student at the Machine Learning and Data Science Unit)

I was born and educated in France, where I completed a double master’s degree from ENSAI and ENSAE in statistics and machine learning. I first came to OIST for a four-month internship in the Machine Learning and Data Science Unit (PI: Professor Makoto Yamada), and later returned to start my PhD. I’m now working in the same unit on deep learning approaches for typhoon forecasting. Outside research, I enjoy exploring Okinawa through hiking trails and snorkeling spots.

Callum Hudson (PhD student at the Marine Climate Change Unit)

Born and raised in Cornwall, UK, I’ve had a lifelong love for all things marine — be that surfing, diving, or searching for life in the intertidal zone. I completed my undergraduate degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford, followed by an MRes in Marine Biology at the University of Plymouth. I am now in my fourth year at OIST, pursuing a PhD in Prof. Ravasi's Marine Climate Change Unit. My research uses natural CO₂ seeps and other analogues of future ocean conditions to investigate how sea urchins respond to drivers of global change such as warming and acidification. By integrating techniques such as μCT, SEM, XRD, RNA-seq, and DNA metabarcoding, I aim to connect molecular, physiological, and ecological responses to better understand the mechanisms underpinning urchin responses. Outside the lab, I enjoy surfing, ultimate frisbee, and onsen hopping across the mainland.
