Exploring synaptic function through fluorescence imaging
Abstract:
In the seminar, I will talk about our research focused on developing and applying fluorescence imaging techniques for studying cell biology and neuroscience. Using our glutamate imaging technique, we have analyzed the regulation of glutamate release at the single synapse level. Combining this technique with super-resolution microscopy, we have uncovered the importance of supramolecular structures formed by synaptic proteins in determining synaptic function. Additionally, our recent efforts have been focused on developing a new fluorescent tag technology that can be used for superresolution microscopy of living cells. I will discuss our progress and potential applications of this technology.

Profile:
Kenzo Hirose is a Professor in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Tokyo. His research focuses on understanding cellular signaling, which plays a crucial role in various physiological functions. He has been developing new techniques to see and study these signaling molecules inside living cells. Recently, he developed a method to image glutamate, an important signaling molecule in the brain. Using this method, he explored how nerve cells communicate with each other and found that each synapse has multiple sites where communication occurs. Employing super-resolution microscopy, he made the significant discovery that small molecular clusters are responsible for these communication sites. Currently, he is working on adapting super-resolution microscopy techniques for use in living cells.
