What are Ikebana and Ikenobo?

About IKENOBO

Ikebana is one of the representative aspects of Japanese traditional culture, and ikebana began with Ikenobo.

The history of Ikenobo is the history of ikebana. Ikebana began with Ikenobo.

The Rokkakudo Temple is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku about 1400 years ago. Priests who made floral offerings at the Buddhist altar of this temple lived near a pond (the Japanese word “ike”), in a small hut (called “bo”). For this reason people began to call the priests by the name “Ikenobo.”

Arranging flowers and finding beauty in flowers - these are linked to a heart that values nature and cares for other people. This is the spirit of Ikenobo Ikebana.

People in every era have loved flowers, but our predecessors in ikebana felt that flowers were not only beautiful but that they could reflect the passing of time and the feelings in their own hearts. When we sense plant’s unspoken words and silent movements we intensify our impressions through form, a form which becomes ikebana.

We arrange plants cut and removed from nature so that they are filled with new beauty when placed in a new environment. Rather than simply re-create the shape a plant had in nature, we create with branches, leaves, and flowers a new form which holds our impression of a plant’s beauty as well as the mark of our own spirit. Ikebana should also suggest the forces of nature with which plants live in harmony - branches bent by winter winds ... a leaf half-eaten by insects.

Ikenobo considers not only an open flower but also a flower’s bud beautiful, for within the bud is the energy of life’s opening toward the future. Past, present, future ... in each moment plants, and humans, respond to an ever-changing environment. Together with plants, humans are vital parts of nature and our arranging ikebana expresses this awareness.

Like a poem or painting made with flowers, Ikenobo’s ikebana expresses both the beauty of flowers and the beauty of longing in our own hearts. Ikenobo’s spirit has spread not only in Japan but throughout the world. It is our deepest hope that the beauty of Ikenobo will increasingly serve as a way of drawing the world’s people together.

生け花は日本の伝統文化の代表的なものであり、その始まりは池坊にあります。

池坊の歴史は、いけばなの歴史でもあるといえます。生け花は池坊から始まりました。

六角堂は今から約1400年前、聖徳太子によって創建されたと言われています。この寺の仏壇に花を供える僧侶は、池（「いけ」）のそばにある小さな小屋（「ぼ」）に住んでいました。そのため、人々は僧侶のことを「池坊」と呼ぶようになりました。

花を生け、花の中に美を見出す。それは、自然を大切にし、人を思いやる心につながります。これこそが「池坊生け花」の精神です。

いつの時代も人は花を愛でますが、生け花の先人たちは、花が美しいだけでなく、時の流れや自分の心の中を映し出すものであると感じていました。植物の言葉にならない言葉や静かな動きを感じ取ったとき、その印象を形にして強めるのが「いけばな」なのです。

自然から切り取られ、取り出された植物は、新しい環境に置かれたとき、新たな美しさをたたえるように生けられます。自然界にあった形を再現するのではなく、枝や葉や花で新しい形を作り、植物の美しさを感じるとともに、私たちの心を刻み込むのです。また、冬の風で曲がった枝、虫に食われた葉など、植物と共生する自然の力を感じさせるものでなければなりません。

池坊は、開いた花だけでなく、花のつぼみも美しいと考えます。つぼみの中には、未来に向かって開いていく生命のエネルギーが宿っているからです。過去、現在、未来......刻々と変化する環境の中で、植物も人間も、その一瞬一瞬に対応しています。人間も植物と同じように自然の一部であり、生け花はその意識を表現しているのです。

池坊の生け花は、花で詠んだ詩や絵のように、花の美しさと私たちの心の憧れを表現しているのです。池坊の精神は日本だけでなく、世界中に広まっています。池坊の美が、ますます世界の人々を引きつけるものとなることを、私たちは心から願っています。

What you will learn from this workshop

1. The instructor will explain history of Ikenobo Ikenbana (Japanese traditional flower arrangements), what kinds of flowers will use for this workshop, and how to  
2. All participants will arrange flowers by themselves and express their imagination.（At the same time, the instructor will show you demonstration.）
3. The instructor will explain and adjust your flower arrangement.

1:池坊の華道の歴史や私用する花、花の生け方の説明を行います。

2:参加者達が実際に花を生けます。講師の方もご一緒に”立花”もしくは”自由花"でデモンストレーションを行います。

3:講師が参加者の生けた花を手直し解説します。

Instructor Information

INSTRUCTOR PROFILE  Ryosuke Takatsuki

Joined The Industrial Bank of Japan in 1995. After working at the Sendai Branch, he worked as a credit analyst for the distribution and retail industry in the Credit Department at the Head Office, and was also in charge of integrated risk management and refining the bank‘s internal rating system. In 2001, he moved to the Internet Research Institute, where he closed several M&A deals, including a subsidiary of Nippon Steel Corporation, before joining INSPiRE. He was involved in the management of the JSIT-1 Fund, which invests in public companies, and the ITIF Fund, which invests in private companies. In 2008, he became President and Representative Director of INSPiRE (current position). He lead to raise and to manage PNB INSPiRE Ethical Fund(2014-) and INSPiRE Mutualistic Symbiosis Fund(2022-). Investment from those funds, he has lead several venture companies to become listed comapnies (euglena, giftee, Michrowave Chemical, Green Earth Institute, Fisker, etc.) He is currently Bodygram Inc., Hattendo International Corporation, Imuraya Startup Planning Corporation, Okiden CplusC Corporation, and Unaginobori Corporation. He also teaches as a Visiting professor at Kanazawa Institute of Technology, and Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. He has been a member of the Council for Food, Agriculture and Rural Area Policy of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries since July 2021. His hobbies include Japanese flower arrangement “Ikebana", and he is a special member of Ikenobo, the origin of Ikebana, and holds a diploma as an associate professor of Ikebana at the 2nd grade. He is also said to be an expert meat griller, and is a dedicated griller at BBQs. He holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Keio University. He was born in Hiroshima in 1971 and has lived in Tokyo, Shizuoka, Chiba, Miyagi, and Saitama Prefectures. 

1995年、日本興業銀行入行。仙台支店にて東北地方の法人顧客に対するコーポレートファイナンス業務全般を経験したうえで、本店審査部にて流通小売業のクレジットアナリスト、さらに統合リスク管理・行内格付制度の精緻化を担当。みずほホールディングス発足時には与信企画部にて新しい行内格付制度の策定を主導。2001年、インターネット総合研究所に転じ、新日本製鐵株式会社の子会社等複数のM&A案件をクロージングしたうえで、インスパイア入社。公開企業を投資対象とするJSIT-1ファンドや、未公開企業を投資対象とするITIFファンドの運営に関与。累計で20社以上の革新的技術を有するベンチャー企業の役員に就任し、イノベーションの具現化をテーマとして、事業法人との資本・業務提携をベースにした事業開発を実践し、株式会社ユーグレナ（退任）、株式会社イード取締役（退任）等を歴任、株式公開に導く。2008年、インスパイア代表取締役社長に就任（現任）。現在、株式会社ABEJA 取締役、Bodygram Inc. 取締役、株式会社八天堂インターナショナル 取締役、井村屋スタートアッププランニング株式会社 取締役、株式会社おきでんCplusC 取締役、金沢工業大学 客員教授、立命館アジア太平洋大学 客員教授などを兼任。2021年7月より、農林水産省 食料・農業・農村政策審議会委員。慶應義塾大学経済学部卒。趣味の生花は、華道家元池坊 特別会員で准教授三級 華匡の免状を持ち、スピア・フィッシングでは漁師顔負けの素潜りをこなす。肉焼きの名手とも言われており、BBQでは専ら焼き手に徹している。広島県出身、静岡県、千葉県、東京都、宮城県、埼玉県在住歴あり。
