OIST Mini Symposium "Viscoelasticity and Dissipative Dynamics of Rods and Membranes"

We can easily admire the shapes of films obtained by dipping rigid frames in soapy water, but it may be even more surprising to observe the dynamics of such liquid films when they span flexible frames or when different proteins are suspended in the liquid instead of soap molecules.

New experiments in this direction are being performed in the Mathematical Soft Matter Unit and the mathematical modeling of that dynamics presents numerous challenges.

Some of the questions that arise are: How can we model the mechanical response of the bounding frame? What surface energy is generated by the dispersion of different macromolecules in water? Can we describe within a variational approach the strongly dissipative dynamics of these systems? Would this description help in building computational methods to predict the possibly many stable equilibria of these systems?

The aim of this symposium is to bring together people with key expertise in relation to those questions, inviting both well-established and emerging researchers to share ideas and collaborate on constructing physically sound mathematical models for the dynamics of interacting rods and membranes.
