Understanding and Explaining Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

This talk is aimed at both parents of children with ADHD and professionals who work with individuals with ADHD.  The talk aims to enhance understanding of ADHD and provide clear examples and scenarios that can be used to explain ADHD to other people.  Specifically the talk will explore how typical and normative the symptoms of ADHD actually are and how environment and motivation play a role in the expression of ADHD symptoms.  The talk will also aim to challenge the commonly held beliefs that the prevalence of ADHD is rising.  The talk will conclude with some recently published evidence about how modification of an ADHD child’s environment can lead to improvements for both the child and their family.
