Abstract:  Internal models of the world are an important component of intelligence, allowing animals to simulate the environment and plan ahead. It has long been debated how components of internal models manifest in sensory cortices. In this study we found that primary visual cortex (V1) of mice can disambiguate visually identical locations and predict upcoming visual stimuli based on knowledge of spatial location in a virtual environment, and shows a prediction error response to omissions of an expected stimulus. We identify anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) as a potential source of stimulus predictions but not prediction errors. Our results are consistent with a predictive processing account of cortical function.
